Building a Sustainable Foundation

While most students had left campus for the summer, the learning didn’t stop at Pitt as leaders across Business and Operations came together to continue their own education. Staff from the seven units met at the University Club for the bi-annual Business and Operations Leadership Meeting, which provides an opportunity for information, ideas, and personal connections to be made across every department from Human Resources to Grounds to Mobility.

Carolyn Verga joins the newly formed Office of Planning, Design and Construction as the new Assistant Vice Chancellor for Campus Planning in January of 2023. She comes to Pitt after serving as the Director of Facility Planning for The Ohio State University.

Pitt’s Energy Center revolutionizes energy efficiency

At Pitt, we are always searching for creative solutions to improve efficiency and incorporate sustainability. This was the attitude of Facilities Management staff when they proposed to expand the capabilities of the Energy Management Operations Center for the Pittsburgh campus in 2020. Once implemented, the project quickly elevated the ability of staff to monitor and regulate utilities across campus.

Making a Difference in Hospitality: Jackie Gillespie

Commencement is a celebration of all the hard work and accomplishments of new Pitt graduates. This spring there was another celebration behind the scenes— it was the first time Jackie Gillespie oversaw the festivities as assistant vice chancellor of Hospitality. She wasn’t given an easy task either— Pitt hosted two commencement ceremonies to celebrate 2022 and 2020 graduates (who missed out on an in-person graduation due to the pandemic). The honors ceremonies were also split into three separate events for a more personalized experience—another first for the Special Events team.

Melony A. Sacopulos joins Pitt as Associate Vice Chancellor for Capital Financial Management

Melony A. Sacopulos joined the University of Pittsburgh as Associate Vice Chancellor, Capital Financial Management in April 2022.

In this new position, Sacopulos will provide strategic vision in managing the University’s major capital projects and real estate initiatives. She will also provide financial assessments of prospective capital projects and real estate dispositions. Working closely with the CFO’s Office, she will help ensure that the advancement of the University’s ambitious Campus Master Plan is conducted on a solid financial basis.
