Scott Bernotas

Scott Bernotas is the Vice Chancellor of Facilities Management at the University of Pittsburgh, entrusted with the physical care and preservation of the University’s over 115-year-old campus. Bernotas manages a team of over 600 facilities professionals that provide services to every school, department, and unit in more than 140 buildings and over 145 acres of the Pittsburgh campus.  

Since coming to Pitt in 2015, Bernotas has balanced preservation of the University’s historical structures with advancing management of maintenance and utilities, including leading the University Capital Preservation Projects and Pitt’s Energy Management Operations Center. He has championed efficiency through increased utilities monitoring and scheduled preventative maintenance across campus. Through collaborations across departments, Bernotas has contributed to the expansion of sustainable spaces and infrastructure including construction of the upper campus chilled water plant and growth of LEED certified spaces. In 2020, Bernotas was nationally recognized in Environment + Energy Leader’s annual "best of" list of environment and energy professionals.  

Prior to joining the University, Bernotas spent 29 years in the U.S. Navy’s Civil Engineering Corps. He managed projects ranging from federal real estate, environmental compliance and restoration, maintenance and repair of federal properties, and served as a facilities contracting officer. His last naval assignment was overseeing and maintaining all U.S. Naval Academy facilities.

Bernotas is a licensed engineer and holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from California Polytechnic State University.
